The Stockholm archipelago is known for its amazing food scene, and a quick trip by boat, bus, or car from the city will take you to a variety of culinary experiences – often with a great view.

In the archipelago, you can enjoy anything from fine dining with white tablecloths at Smådalarö Gård to a laid-back artisan pizza with wild garlic on a pier at Nåttarö.

Local and Delicious

The archipelago has a mix of well-known restaurants and smaller spots like pubs, farm dairies, shops, and breweries that serve locally produced treats. From pizza to gourmet dining, coffee, ice cream, sparkling wine, beer –you’ll find something for everyone. Many restaurants focus on using local ingredients like game and vegetables grown in nearby gardens or supplied by local farmers. The price of food is often higher on the islands than on the mainland, due to transport, the location and other things, but it is much appreciated to support the entrepreneurs here. Of course, you can also bring your own food and enjoy it in nature.

Warm Hospitality and Simple Pleasures

A great way to explore the archipelago is by renting a cottage on one of the islands. Wake up early while the sea is still and the mist floats over the meadows. Take a walk through the woods until you reach the shore, and enjoy breakfast on a rock while watching the sunrise and listening to nature. The archipelago is known for its friendly locals, so don’t hesitate to ask for tips on the best spots to visit on the island.

Where To Begin?

Nåttarö, often called "Sweden’s biggest sandbox" for its many beaches and lovely coves, is an island that’s easy to fall in love with. It’s home to 580 hectares of forest, beaches, and skerries waiting to be explored. In 1959, deer were brought to the island, and today, they help keep the grass short. Locally sourced meat is served at the restaurant, and the guest harbor offers local beer. If you’re lucky, the ice cream boat might stop by for a sweet treat. From May to the end of September, you can enjoy everything Nåttarö has to offer, and it’s worth returning at Christmas for the special holiday menu.

Quiet and Wildlife

Many of the islands in the Stockholm archipelago don’t have busy roads, making them peaceful and family-friendly. The lack of traffic also allows wildlife to flourish, so you might spot foxes, deer, moose, beavers, and various birds. It’s the perfect way to enjoy delicious food while being surrounded by nature – without the noise of the city.
