The Stockholm archipelago is beautiful all year-round, and hiking with your four-legged friend is truly something special.

Hiking with a dog in the archipelago is an activity that is both fun and easy to do together. Not far from the city or suburbs, you’ll find hiking trails that offer stunning views and exciting adventures for all along the way. Hiking is also a great exercise for you and your dog, providing both mental and physical stimulation. It strengthens muscles and ensures your dog can satisfy its need for movement in a rich environment. Hiking simply reduces stress and enhances well-being. Plus, a cozy walk strengthens the bond between you and your dog and gives you both a chance to explore the world together.

Enjoyable all year-round

Do you love strolling along a beach on a warm summer day, letting the sea cool warm paws? Or maybe you enjoy walking through the forest in crisp autumn air, with the opportunity to pick mushrooms? Perhaps you prefer trekking through green meadows on a spring day with birdsong in your ears, or even playing in the snow during a crisp winter weekend when the sun shines over the ice? The archipelago is a wonderful place to be all year -round, offering plenty of space for both you and your dog to play and relax.

What you should know about dogs and the archipelago

In Sweden, “allemansrätten” – the right of public access applies also when hiking with dogs, but as every dog owner knows, this also comes with some responsibility. Of course, you can bring your dog on your hike, but be extra cautious from March 1 to August 20 since it’s the breeding season for wildlife. During this time, dogs must be kept on a leash to avoid disturbing wild animals such as and birds. For the rest of the year, your dog are allowed to be off-leash, but always under supervision. Be aware that many islands in the Stockholm archipelago are classified as national parks, where dogs must be on a leash year-round.

Getting there

Most islands can be reached by boat, which allow dogs – but it’s good to check the specific rules for your trip in advance. Consider bringing a towel or blanket for your dog to use as a bed on the deck. If your dog is not used to boats, you can start with shorter trips, like the 30-minute ride from Stockholm city to Fjäderholmarna. This gives your dog chance to get used to loud engine noises and choppy water.

Things to consider

Many islands in the archipelago have limited access to fresh water, so don’t forget to bring water for both you and your dog. Letting your dog drink from lakes or the sea is not always advisable. An active dog can overheat easily, so try to choose an island with plenty of trees, for shade. Dogs don’t always show when they are tired, so take frequent breaks and rest to ensure you both have enough energy for the entire hike. Another thing to consider is that the archipelago’s terrain can vary greatly, from sandy beaches to pine needle trails or sharp rocks. If the terrain is particularly tough, paw protection might be a good idea.

Keep an eye out

The archipelago’s rocks can get extremely hot in the summer, so always check to ensure your dog doesn’t burn its paws. When it rains, the rocks can on the other hand become slippery, so be careful. A simple way to protect your dog is to keep it on a leash instead of letting it run free. Snakes are common in the archipelago, so make sure that you know what to do if your dog is bitten. Always check your dog for ticks during the hike, and again a few times after you return home. Seaweed and algae blooms can also be hazards, so be mindful of local conditions. And if you see bird chicks or other animals on your hike, keep your distance. Here, you can read more about hiking in the archipelago – with or without a dog.
