Hiking in the archipelago lets you experience some of Sweden’s most unique nature.

The landscape can sometimes remind you of the southernmost part of Skåne, and at other times feel like you’re on a hill in Västerbotten in the north — all within the same day. What makes hiking in Stockholm’s archipelago so special is that you can explore untouched nature with mountains, valleys, and forests that haven’t been developed — yet it’s all still close to the city. Getting here is easy, and the adventure starts the moment you step off the boat.

Water Everywhere

Soft cliffs shaped by the ice sheet. Water everywhere you go. No matter where you hike in Stockholm’s archipelago, you’ll have the chance to follow the shoreline and get that sense of adventure — surrounded by forests, cliffs, and waves. Every island has its own personality, like Utö with its meadows and beaches, the lively summer buzz of Sandhamn, or the calm of Nåttarö. You can also pick the type of hike that suits you whether it’s a food-filled journey from hostel to hostel, enjoying meals with a view, or a peaceful walk where you might not meet a soul — but can still take a swim whenever you like.

Hiking All Year Round

Going on an adventure and finding new experiences doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. It’s easy to enjoy lakeside and seaside hikes year-round. Each season in the archipelago brings its own kind of beauty, whether it’s summer, autumn when the leaves glow red and orange, spring with birds singing, or even winter, when the snow lies thick.

Explore Nature Together

The areas managed by the Skärgårdsstiftelsen, especially on the mainland, are great for hikers of all skill levels. By following marked trails, you can adjust your hike to suit your group. You can explore challenging trails within a single area or take a shorter, easier route that loops through comfortable terrain near a parking lot. Whether you prefer staying near civilization or want to enjoy some solitude, there’s something for everyone. The trails are many and long, and there are often grill areas or other amenities depending on which trail you choose and where you start.

Hike wherever you want (almost)

In Sweden, “allemansrätten” lets you hike (almost) anywhere you want. You can follow the information on tourist maps to see how long each trail is, what kind of terrain you’ll go through, and where the paths lead. You’re also free to venture off the trails, but be mindful of nature to avoid causing damage. Whether you stick to a trail or wander off, hiking in the archipelago is a beautiful experience.

3 Tips for Hiking in the Archipelago

Bring Water
Some islands have services, while others don’t, so it’s always a good idea to carry water and emergency supplies.

Pack a Change of Clothes
Even in warm weather, it’s nice to have a change of clothes with full coverage. This helps avoid ticks and protects you if the weather changes. And don’t forget sunscreen in the summer.

Keep Track of Time
Plan your trip carefully and know the ferry schedules and service hours. Some islands also have accommodations if your feet need a rest.
